X-Emergency Services (X-ES) is an organisation of social entrepreneurs with a strong focus on helping those who have served in the emergency services transition effectively and excel in their post-service life.

X-ES draws on a proven business model to provide support and resources tailored for the Emergency Services Community. We work to support those transitioning to establish their own pathway built on access to relevant knowledge and information, examples of lived experiences, collaboration, training, and peer to peer support.

A key pioneer behind this undertaking has been Ren Kapur MBE who has worked tirelessly over the years to bring support systems together for under-served communities, the support of our young people in education and particularly the UK Armed Forces community.

Established in June 2016 X-ES initially focused on transition into self-employment. After extensive research and discussions with various interested parties, X-ES finally chose in December 2019 to partner with Emergency Services Career Transition (ESCT), a not-for-profit company, established by former police officers, who also wanted to improve career transition for those leaving the emergency services. Despite the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 plans were formed and finally realised in March 2021 when ESCT completely integrated their team and services within X-ES. Our board of directors is now a strong group of former public servants, an entrepreneur, and a strategy consultant; all of whom bring their own unique experience, knowledge, drive and passion to the emergency services community.

Supporting our board of directors is a dynamic and multi-skilled executive team that have a breadth
of experience across the business competency areas of project management, event coordination, training, marketing, and business support services. Our collaborative approach means we bring together stakeholders from across society to deliver better outcomes for service leavers. This includes government departments, charitable organisations, federations, and corporate organisations all of whom have a valuable contribution to make to transition outcomes. X-ES is the catalyst of change to make things happen.

Richard Rowland

Richard Rowland

Richard served 30 years as a police officer, up to the rank of Chief Superintendent. He gained extensive experience covering both operational and organisational leadership, major project management, major event organisation and technology insertion. Richard is a qualified trainer and associate of the College of Policing. He has long been associated with the military, and now chairs an advisory committee for Reserved Armed Forces. Richard is the Managing Director of State 21 Ltd, which is a consultancy and training company.

Richard recognised the lack of support given nationally to those working within the Emergency Services if they wanted to develop their working portfolios, or as they prepared to leave the Services through choice or on retirement. As a Director of X-ES, he intends to tackle this challenge head on to support as many beneficiaries on their journey as possible.

Gavin McMillan

Gavin McMillan

Gavin spent thirty years with Hampshire Constabulary as a police officer.
During his career he carried out a variety of strategic command roles with responsibility for the leadership and management of people, performance and partnerships. He led on a number of significant change programmes during his career at both a local and national level.

Gavin has always excelled in the development of people, either through the management of people/teams or within the Learning and Development arena, both as a qualified Trainer or more strategically in his last role as Superintendent, Head of Learning and Development.

He joined Richard Rowland and Gerard Kiernan as a Director of State 21 Ltd, and is now a Director for X-Emergency Services. Gavin believes that all Emergency Services Personnel and their families should be given the support they need, to make the transition out of the Services into civilian life, a much smoother and less stressful journey than many experience today.
